Great teams aren’t formed overnight. It isn’t about putting the best talent together and just watching them go to work. It is about creating a sense of cohesion, about having individuals come together for a greater goal.
Whether that be in an office setting or out on the field, there are a few tips that leaders can use to bring their team together for the greater good.
Find Common Goals
No matter the setting, each person is going to have their individual goals. While that is fine and well, there needs to be shared goals as well. Those goals are what bring the team together as a singular unit.
As a coach, it is important to ensure that everyone on the project or in the program understands the goals laid out. They need to know how their individual efforts can help push the team over the hill of success.
Responsibilities and Roles
It is crucial for coaches and leaders to create roles within the team. Without that cohesion, even the most talented teams can move forward without direction. Each person on the team has their role and their importance.
By identifying and clarifying these roles, it means a greater unity in achieving the goals set forth. Perhaps someone in a lead role may be better suited in a support role instead. It can take time to identify those responsibilities and roles, but they become a crucial part of team success.
Off the Field/Out of the Office
While not everyone on a given team is going to be friends, it is important that the team-building efforts go beyond the office or the field. Great teams find success because they find a deeper level of care for one another and want to achieve that success together.
It is why team-building activities like going out to dinner or attending an event together can be so beneficial. It is a chance for everyone to interact outside of a “business” setting, allowing tighter bonds to be formed.
